The McCalin winery is located in the province of Teramo, nestled between the hills of Colonnella and Controguerra in the small town of Martinsicuro. The terroir in which the vines of this winery are rooted is predominantly clayey; Federico Nardi's landholding currently spans about 2 hectares, divided into five distinct vineyards. The area where the winery is situated boasts optimal climatic conditions for vine growth, thanks to abundant sunshine and the salt-laden sea breezes that impart flavor to the grapes. From the outset, with full respect for nature and the territory, Federico chose to adhere to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
In the vineyard, no chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used; the plants are left as free as possible to complete their growth cycle. Only sulfur and copper are used to keep the underlying soil "neutral." In the cellar, only spontaneous fermentations occur, without the addition of yeasts other than the indigenous ones of the blend and without temperature control. Refinement typically takes place in steel tanks or barriques.
The McCalin winery creates a label for each parcel of land. These primarily involve indigenous blends of Passerina, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Malvasia, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, recovering ancient clones of old grape varieties to best reflect the original flavors of the terroir. The KOMANDANTE label was not produced in 2019 due to the severe hailstorm that struck the Teramo area.
In 2022, 510 bottles were produced.
